Keys on the seat, doors locked, engine maybe still running. It happens in Publix parking lots, at gas stations on 441, and in driveways every day. Here is what to do, in order.
1. Check if anyone is in danger
If a child, a pet or anyone who can't get out on their own is locked inside, call 911 first. In Florida, the inside of a closed car heats up fast, even on a mild day. Don't wait for a locksmith in that situation.
2. Try every door and the trunk
It sounds obvious, but many lockouts end here. Check all doors, the rear hatch and the trunk. On some cars the trunk release works even when the doors are locked.
3. Look for a spare key
Is there a spare at home, at work or with a family member nearby? If someone can bring it in 20 minutes, that's often the cheapest fix.
4. Check your insurance or roadside plan
Some auto insurance policies and roadside plans include lockout service. It's worth a quick call to find out. Ask how long they expect it to take.
5. Call a local locksmith
A mobile locksmith comes to the car, opens it with professional entry tools and checks that the locks and windows still work. If the key is lost, not just locked inside, the locksmith can also cut and program a new one on the spot.
What to skip
- Coat hangers and slim jims. Modern car doors have wiring, airbag sensors and linkages inside. A hanger can scratch the paint, tear the weatherstrip or disconnect the lock rod.
- Breaking a window. Glass replacement usually costs more than a lockout call, and you'll drive home with a draft.
- Prying the door frame. A bent frame lets in wind and rain for years.
Have this ready when you call
- Your exact location: address, cross streets or the store and parking row
- Year, make and model of the car
- Photo ID and the registration or insurance card in your name
The ID check is there to protect you. A locksmith who opens cars without asking for proof will open yours for someone else too.
